WHAT I HAVE LEARNED DURING MY ONE YEAR STAYING IN JAPAN

A. THE PURPOSE OF MY INDIVIDUAL TRAINING IN JAPAN

  1. To learn more about the Developmental Psychology for the Deaf Children in Education in Japan
  2. To learn more about on how to provide the an effective and efficiently intervention to cope with Deaf children or disabled children whose Mental, Emotional, Social, Cognitive’s problems, or disabled people especially The Deaf who have personality-emotional disturbances through counseling.
  3. To increase my knowledge, skill, and ability especially how to solve problems on disability issues through improve myself in social activity related to the psychology of disability.
  4. To learn more about the development of program as an information service facility for people with hearing impairment in Japan, on how technology plays an important role for the sake of hearing impairment, and to know more about Deaf Activities in Japan.

B. IMPRESSION ABOUT JAPAN

  1. Since my training in Japan, I have learned more about Counseling for The Deaf more depth such as on how to increase skill development in social interaction, decision making, enhancing self esteem, and developing effective communication skills of The Deaf clients. This internships and study psychology for the deaf have helped me to prepare for my career as the deaf psychologist or counselor in the future in Indonesia.
  2. Japan is a place of opportunity and challenges. .Through my individual trainings by participating in several Activities in Deaf World, I have grown personally and have gained valuable leadership skills and gained more self confidence in being proud as A Deaf Person. I have learned so much from my Individual trainings in Japan which has really opened a door to many opportunities for me, such as I can get the information and rich education that I really need to allow me to help other Indonesian deaf children realize their potential. It is hard for me to describe about my trainings in Japan just few words. I think that‘ Communication Accessibility’ is the best description. As I was child, I never have experienced in communicating through sign language due to the culture values among Indonesian society still did not recognize sign language as the communication means for the deaf community that was why I continued to be amazed at how much I’m learning everyday because of this ease of communication in Japan. I have gained valuable information and also able to interact with lots of deaf friends through sign language here.
C. Technology and IL

I was so impressed by the efforts of the government and others private sectors to make solution to help the disabled people to have a new chance of living in a richer life by the advanced of technology. During my stay in Japan, I am so surprised knowing that the disabled people in Japan are actively participating in society by the advanced of technology that encourages Independently living in daily life. The advanced technology really plays an important roles to develop the human resource of disabled people or enable disabled people to access all information and facility.

D. EDUCATION IN JAPAN

As we already know that the biggest difficulty, which most deaf people face in life, is socializing with Hearing people. The causal factor is due to the lack of communication or miscommunication between them, sometimes the Deaf do not have encouragement to have A Pride or Identity as a Deaf person. It might be they fear of being isolated, being refused or ignored by hearing people, so that is why most Deaf have been influenced with the unreasonable perception on their minds by stating that ‘being a hearing person’ is their goal. This phenomena will give a contribution in decreasing their self esteem that not enable them to develop their social and emotion skill in the future.

To cope with it, here I am most surprised since I have had Individual training in Deaf schools which the most important aspect in education here are family’s support and professional/skillful teachers in providing an early intervention on improving social and emotional development of the Deaf students that will contribute them to seek their identity or pride in the future.

I finally understood on how Deaf Teachers play important roles in the promotion of ideology and implementation, providing support to parents, support the deaf students, and promote regional activities and greater awareness in society, such as the activities to find ways to make advances with Deaf Awareness and sign language-2 issues of great import to deaf education in Japan is really very important for as I am very concerned about the deaf in Indonesia as most of them do not get enough education, they fail and receive many disadvantages in their education.

C. IN THE FUTURE

I would like to focus on education especially to spread Deaf Awareness that Sign Language is really needed by all Deaf in Indonesia. And I would like to support The Deaf to be more active participating in the society to be able to live more independently.

Thanks:

would like to express my deepest feeling to DUSKIN for giving me an opportunity studying in many areas here, and to the JSRPD and others people or institutions for Who always care and help me during my one year training.
